Setbacks for our brave mum Maggie

CANCER mum Maggie Thomas (left) was enjoying a relaxing reiki massage yesterday and staying positive in the face of serious setbacks.

The Toddington mother of six was hoping to have surgery last week to remove tumours from her lungs, after undergoing revolutionary last chance hyperthermia treatment in a German clinic, thanks to the generosity of Herald&Post readers.

But her despairing husband David said the operation had been postponed until next week because a scanner at the hospital wasn’t working.

A scan before she left Germany revealed Maggie now has five brain tumours.

David said: “But she manages to stay amazingly positive.”

Herald&Post readers have been so moved by her plight they have donated more than £6,000 to the cost of the £30,000 hyperthermia treatment which blasts the tumours with heat.

Musician Jonny King organised a concert in Woburn Sands last month to swell the funds and now Caroline Ferris-Brown of Luton’s Selective Lets is holding a wine bar reunion party night with the same aim.

It will take place at Charlie Browns nightclub in Midland Road from 8pm on Saturday, November 12.

Caroline said: “We’re raising money for three local causes, including Maggie.

“The others are little Lilly Macglashan, who’s having cancer treatment in America, and Keech Hospice Care.

“We’re having a raffle on the night with some sensational prizes and if anyone would be kind enough to offer more we’d be really grateful.”

Tickets at £5 each are available from Caroline on 07970 018031 or Kathy Nugent on 07706 850 309 and from Sugar Loaf in New Town Street and Storage in Chapel Street.

Maggie and David have been overwhelmed by the response to their appeal.

Maggie said: “The generosity shown to me and my family makes me want to weep.”
