Central Bedfordshire’s Travel Choices Hub is making a real difference to the lives of people in Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable and Houghton Regis according to a recent report.
The research was produced by Sustrans, a leading UK sustainable transport charity, which runs the Travel Choices Hub on behalf of Central Bedfordshire Council.
The survey reveals that the hub has increased awareness of active travel among residents and businesses and helped them improve their health and wellbeing as a result.
It received its 10,000th visitor during 2014. Travel Choices is a three-year project funded by the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund to provide an improved choice for local journeys reducing car use, cutting costs and improving health.
The Travel Choices Hub received its 10,000th visitor in 2014, with people seeking advice on walking, cycling and journey planning or attending events such as bike mechanics workshops, NHS Healthchecks and children’s art activities.
Hub staff are also active in the community, delivering cycle training to children and adults, attending local events and running led cycle rides and walks.
The survey by Sustrans revealed:
44% of people said they had increased their walking activity and 33% their cycling activity since visiting the Travel Choices Hub.
Levels of schoolchildren cycling to school has increased from 1.6% before engaging with Travel Choices’ Bike It project to 15.2% after two years.
40% of respondents said they were more active as a result of engaging with the Travel Choices Hub.
Cllr Nigel Young, Executive Member for Strategic Planning and Economic Development said: “The results of the Sustrans survey demonstrate how effective the Travel Choices project has been in making residents and businesses more responsive to the idea of active travel through friendly, accessible advice and information.
“The project has contributed to improving the health and wellbeing of individuals of all ages and to making Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and Houghton Regis great places for work and leisure.”
