Taxi driver alerts nearby resident by sounding horn after cab is hijacked by two robbers brandishing a knife

A TAXI driver who was robbed at knifepoint and forced to drive from Luton to Houghton Regis, managed to escape the robbers by sounding his car horn.

Beds Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the cab was hijacked on Sunday, January 2. At around 9.30pm two men ran out in front of a taxi in Lewsey Road, Luton, forcing the driver to stop.

When the victim stopped, the men demanded to be taken elsewhere. One sat in the front passenger seat and threatened the driver with a knife while giving directions.

The men told the driver to stop in Fensome Drive, Houghton Regis, where they stole his mobile phone, a leather bag containing a small amount of cash and a wallet.

But the victim managed to alert a resident by sounding his car horn, forcing the robbers to flee on foot.

One of the robbers is described as white, aged between 17 and 19, 5’ 5” tall, stocky build and cropped blonde hair.

Det Con Dick Cunningham, investigating, said: “I am keen to trace anyone who saw the two men in Lewsey Road prior to stopping the taxi, both men ran into the road from opposite sides to bring the vehicle to a stop.
