Tesco supports spooktacular Hallowe’en clean-up in Luton parks

The supermarket backed Luton Borough Council’s ‘Make a Difference Day’, which is a chance for volunteers to give their time and make improvements to green spaces.

Helpers were encouraged to show their Hallowe’en spirit by dressing up in scary outfits, with a prize given by Tesco to the volunteer with the best costume.

The Dunstable Extra Tesco store also provided refreshments for the five teams of helpers, which included Hallowe’en-themed cakes and sweets.

A number of parks benefited from the mass effort, including Freemans Green, Wardown Park, Manor Park (South), Raynham Way Park and Lewsey Green.

These areas received a range of improvements, including bulb planting and litter picking, so that Luton residents can enjoy unspoiled parks and greens.

The day ended with a ceremony at Luton Town Hall, where volunteers were joined by local councillors in planting flowers and trees around the War Memorial.

Adam Divney from Luton Borough Council was delighted with Tesco’s support, saying: “We were delighted to partner with Tesco who were integral to the success of this year’s ‘Make a Difference Day’. Their friendly staff not only worked their socks off throughout the day planting bulbs and picking up litter, but they were also kind enough to provide food and drinks to more than 100 volunteers who took part.

“It was a fantastic day and was so great to see people from a range of different ages, background and cultures taking part. This is another great example of committed volunteers from the community, council and local businesses showing real pride in the town by working together to improve Luton for the better.”

Karen Linley, the award-winning community champion at Dunstable Extra, gave her time to help support the event.

She said: “We are always looking for new ways to support our local community and it was a pleasure to be able to support this event. It was wonderful to see so many people getting into the Hallowe’en spirit and we are proud to have helped make a difference together with Luton Borough Council.”
