Fire service response to strike

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will continue to answer 999 calls and respond to emergencies during the 24 hour strike called by the Fire Brigades Union for next week.

Members will be on continuous strike from 7am on Wednesday, February 25 to 7am on Thursday, February 26.

The FBU is in dispute with the Governement over firefighter pension arrangements.

Chief fire officer Paul Fuller said: “Although this is a national dispute, there is always a local impact when strikes are called.

“Inevitably there will be a reduced service for the community.

“We will need to prioritise 999 calls so that we can respond to those with the greatest potential threat to life.”

He said they had well-practised plans to continue the service, based on previous strikes over the past year.

Deputy chief fire officer Glen Ranger called on the public for support to minimise the risk of fire and other emergencies.

He said: “We urge people to use common sense to minimise the potential for fire to start in the home and to take extra care when dirivng on the county’s roads.”
