Man dies in Houghton Regis blaze

A man has died in a house fire in Houghton Regis in the early hours of this morning.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Control received several 999 calls to report a fire in a house in Chelsea Gardens, Houghton Regis, at around 1.30am this morning,

Fire crews from Dunstable were at the scene within minutes, and a further fire appliance from Toddington was sent to assist in view of the repeat 999 calls to Fire Control. Firefighters arrived to find that there was a fierce fire on the ground floor of the 2-storey dwelling, with smoke in the upper floor.

Firefighters rescued a man from the building and handed them to paramedics for treatment, before they were taken to hospital. A second person, believed to be a neighbour, was also treated for the effects of smoke inhalation at the scene.

Fire Officers later confirmed that a third person, a man, was confirmed deceased at the scene.

The fire was extinguished by 2.21 a.m. with firefighters using 2 hose reels, 1 jet and a covering jet. The fire caused extensive damage to the ground floor, with severe smoke damage to the first floor.

The incident declared under control at 3.25 a.m. and fire crews remained at the scene for a further hour, damping down and cutting away.

A fire investigation is underway.
