Uni pays tribute to Sir Jimmy Savile

THE University of Bedfordshire’s vice chancellor has paid tribute to the late DJ and broadcaster Sir Jimmy Savile, who was given an honorary degree from the university in 2009.

Sir Jimmy, who died at the weekend aged 84, was made an Honorary Doctor of Arts for his lifelong support of the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury.

Professor Les Ebdon, the university’s vice chancellor, said: “I was very sad to hear the news about Sir Jimmy Savile. We were delighted to award him an honorary degree in recognition of all his work at our partner hospital in Stoke Mandeville.

“He was a colourful character and we had a wonderful day with him, and all enjoyed welcoming him to the Luton campus. He seemed to love it as well.

“The world is a bit diminished for his passing.”
