THE skies over Dunstable Downs were filled with a host of colourful characters at the weekend for the annual kite festival.

The spectacle included giant kites in the shape of a fish, tiger, penguin, and octopus, and visitors were also wowed by displays of aerial acrobatics from stunt kite flyers both from the UK and abroad.

Saturday’s wet weather may have not been the best for flying, or watching, but on Sunday more than 5.000 visitors made their way up to the downs to watch the aerial action.

And there was so much going on in the sky that co-organiser Joe Brown even had a call from the RAF.

“We have Civil Aviation Authority clearance but we suddenly had a call from the RAF – there was so much going on in the air that we had shown up on their radar for the first time,” he said. “They said they thought they’d better just check.”

Showing off their skills for the crowds were The Flying Squad, Jos Valcke from the Netherlands, Team Spectrum, Cascade Kites, Dark Star, Son of the Winds, Stopsley Flyers and the Great Ouse Kite Flyers.

“Towards the middle of Sunday afternoon there were so many kites up, it was a fantastic sight,” said Joe.
