VIDEO: Whipsnade walk is just great for Scott

EMBARKING on a jumbo rite of passage, Scott the elephant took part in his first official walkabout at Whipsnade Zoo on Monday.

Four-month-old Scott followed in the hefty footsteps of older siblings George and Donna as he joined the rest of the herd for the first time on their 2.5-mile daily trek around the zoo, taking in spectacular views of the Aylesbury Vale and Chiltern Downs.

While the other Asian elephants walk trunk-to-tail around the zoo, Scott is still learning to stay close to his mum Azizah. The walk included a short stop-off, where the gentle giants had the chance to graze and rest while young Scott had the chance to play.

Assistant curator of elephants Lee Sambrook said: “Scott is doing really well, he’s very healthy.

“He follows his mum around on the walk and tries to run at bamboo and sticks he sees along the way. He’s quite a character.”

Pint-sized pachyderm Scott was born at Whipsnade on October 18 after a mammoth 700-day pregnancy, weighing about 16 stone. Yet he was still the smallest elephant ever born at the zoo.
