Weighing in for charity

THE WEIGHT of a 20kg training vest is minimal compared to the burden of responsibility carried daily by Keech Hospice Care staff.

That’s the opinion of recruitment director Lee Moynes, 33, of Crabtree Way in Dunstable.

To prove his point the self-confessed fitness fanatic donned a heavy singlet for a fundraising half marathon in Exeter to publicise a 55 mile charity challenge he is planning for October.

The father-of-two said: “It was unique, no-one has ever done anything like that before.”

He claimed running 13 miles with the handicap hadn’t really bothered him – but it had brought home how Keech staff have to carry their load for the rest of their lives.

Lee’s day-long challenge will take him to all six Masonic Halls in Bedfordshire, collecting pledges from their 55 Masonic lodges.

He will run on his own, accompanied by a support cyclist and back-up team.

His wife Michelle is a qualified masseuse and she will massage his legs along the way to get rid of lactic acid build-up which hampers performance.

Lee said: “I’ll start at Bedford Masonic Hall, then go on to Biggleswade, followed by Ampthill, Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable before finishing up in Luton.”

Some time ago the former Manshead pupil who goes to the gym every day was part of a six-man group who did a 24 hour sponsored endurance test at Harpers Fitness in Dunstable.

“I needed a new challenge,” he said. “And I wanted to raise money for Keech. My target is £4,000.

“We all know someone who’s been touched by the amazing work they do at the hospice.

“I want to raise awareness about that too.”
