Zoo’s new foal revealed to the public

Whipsnade’s new rare baby zebra may only be a month old but she is already earning her racing strips.

The as-yet-unnamed Grevy’s zebra foal is starting to gambol around her paddock with the rest of her herd, including mum Henna and dad Abeba.

Born on July 17, the leggy youngster was born with brown stripes which will turn black as she gets older.

Her stripes are unique like fingerprints – no two zebra’s patterns are the same.

Africa section team leader, Mark Holden, said: “Henna is doing a great job of looking after her new arrival. It’s her first-born so she’s very protective but both of them are doing really well.

The foal can often be seen up and running with the rest of the herd or having a rest with mum.”

She is the 27th foal to be born at the Zoo as part of a European Endangered Species Programme and is an important addition to a species that is classified ‘endangered’ – There are only an estimated 2,500 of the animals remaining in the wild.

The Grevy’s zebra suffered declining numbers in the 70s and 80s due to commercial hunting for their skins and habitat loss.
