ATHLETICS: Coombes wins Luton 10k

The third and final race in the three race series, the Luton 10k, took place recently with nearly 200 runners braving the hot and humid conditions.

On the popular new one lap course through Luton Hoo and returning on the new Harpenden to Luton cycleway, Simon Coombes of Leighton Buzzard made light of the conditions to finish in 33.41smins, 30 seconds clear of second placed Andrew Inskip fromBedford and County AC, while Leighton teammate Glen Turner finished a distant third.

In the Ladies race, newcomer Francesca Vidler won in 44.46mins from consistent Sarah Thorne of Dunstable Road Runners with Dianne Potter third.

Stuart Still of Luton AC again took the first veteran title in 38.11mins with Liz Rollinson the Ladies title in 46.57mins.

In the veteran male categories the winners were Paul Halford (Boxfit) V45, Keith Hammond V50, Miroslaw Paliwoda V55, Chris Lamont (Stopsley) V60, Alan Weir (Stopsley) V65 and PJ Hough (Stopsley) V75.

In the Ladies categories the winners were Sarah Shynn (Dunstable) V40, Perry Lafrenais (unattached) V50, Lorraine Daglish (Luton AC) V55, Margaret DeWinter (Dunstable) V60 and Elaine McCulloch (Bedford Harriers) V65. Glen Turner of Leighton Buzzard and Kim Gilbert of Dunstable Road Runners were the overall series winners.
