ATHLETICS: McDonnell falls just short

The Senior and U23 men ran together and Luton’s John McDonnell worked his way gradually through the field to put himself in contention for one of the six Great Britain U23 spots on offer.

Swapping places with local rival Jack Goodwin of Bedford & County AC throughout the race, the long finishing straight should have favoured McDonnell’s superior track speed.

However, Goodwin proved stronger and finished six seconds in front of a disappointed McDonnell to grab the last team place to compete in Serbia on December 8.

Luton’s Daniel Woodgate also ran well to finish 13th while in the U20 ladies race, Rebecca Murray and Revee Walcott-Nolan finished 11th and 21st respectively.

The Chiltern Cross-Country League continues this Saturday at Campbell Park, Milton Keynes.
