ATHLETICS: Second spot for Luton AC at Cambridge

Luton Athletic Club, supported by Luton Rotary Club, took second place in their third Southern Athletics League match of the season at Cambridge on Saturday.

Finishing just 12 points behind the hosts, who were winners, the result saw Luton move up to 10th place in the division.

The women’s competition got off to a good start in the hammer with Suzanna Wise second with 44.22m and Vicky Hill winning the B event with 30.75m.

Jo Blair and Hill followed this with a double victory in the shot with 10.14m and 8.48m respectively.

More success followed in the discus, as Wise took the win throwing 25.77m and Hill was second in the B event with 19.22m.

In the javelin there was another double victory for Blair and Wise, with throws of 46.83m and 20.65m respectively, as Blair was named female athlete of the division.

Wise also took third in the B long jump with 3.78m, as Jazmine Barnett was second with 4.43m in the A event.

Wise then cleared 1.05m for third in the B high jump with new recruit, Eleanor Griffin, clearing 1.35m for victory.

In the triple jump, Barnett was again second with 9.83m and Kathryn Canham won the B event with 8.78m.

Barnett was second in the 400m hurdles (73.8secs) with Grace Keane third in the B race in 98.3secs.

On the track there was more success for Griffin, winning the 100m in 12.8secs, while Lauren Myrie-Formstone was second in the B race in 13.3secs.

In the 200m races, Griffin took second in 27.1secs and Anna Bright won the B race in 27.2secs.

The 400m events saw Kathryn Canham second (61.7secs), with mum Rosie third in the B race in 65.secs.

Jo Winfield came fourth in the 800m race in 2.39.7mins with Wise third in the B race clocking 3.32.3mins.

The 3,000m race saw the return of Claire McMahon after two years out with an injury and she ran brilliantly to finish second in 10.52.6mins, with Jo Winfield winning the B race in 12.14.9mins.

McMahon later teamed up with Rosie Canham in the 1,500m races, both finishing third with times of 5.17.8mins and 5.45.3mins respectively.

The men’s competition began with David Burrell and son, Jamie Potton-Burrell, getting their busy day underway in the shot putt.

Potton-Burrell finished second in the A string with 11.17m while Burrell won the B string with 10.88m.

The pair followed this up with wins in the A and B hammer with Potton-Burrell throwing 54.47m for a fantastic PB and Burrell 39.50m.

Burrell also recorded 35.29m and Potton-Burrell 29.13m in the javelin for third places in the A and B string.

The father and son duo then finished with Burrell throwing 33.53m and Potton-Burrell 32.30 in the discus for second and first places.
