IN PICTURES: Boxers back with a bang at York Hall show

CLASSY Bobby George scored a unanimous 40-36 points triumph over ldeh Ockuko at the ‘Seize The Day’ show at York Hall’s Bethnal Green on Sunday and the Shamrock boxer was swiftly signed up by big time promoter Dennis Hobson, writes Mark Wood.

Trainer Mervyn Turner said: “He is expecting his second child in July so we aim to keep him busy till then and he will then have a rest in the closed season to allow him to enjoy some time with his newborn before getting busy again in the new season.”

There was a controversial 40-38 reverse for George’s club-mate Marco Stephenson who lost to Scott Hartley, while Graham-Earl-trained Luton fighter Danny Mulhern secured a 40-36 points victory over Latvian Olafs Sirmanis in their welterweight contest.

Turner said: “Marco’s bout was hailed by the trade press as the bout of the night and the general feeling was that Hartley may have just edged it but that was about it.

“Marco had a very slow start because he had problems making the weight so was weak which not only affected the start but slowed him down throughout.

“However, Hartley came in overweight which gave the house fighter a big advantage obviously to Marco’s disadvantage.

“Marco has been tipped for success by renown boxing manager and matchmaker for the show Jim Evans who said Marco should have won the fight. Hartley didn’t win it Marco threw it away but it was very close.

“It was obvious that he was much the better boxer and all he needs to do is get out on a regular basis and learn his trade. He will then be a good boxer and I can see an area title for him in the not too distant future.”
