Burger gets her skates on

Pukka ice hockey star Samantha Burger can’t wait to take on a series of Finnish teams in Helsinki after being selected for the England squad, writes Mark Wood.

The 30-year-old engineer for SELEX ES Ltd lives in Farley Hill and plays ice hockey for Milton Keynes Falcons ladies team and inline roller hockey for Dunstable Gators and Jokers.

Burger has twice played for England South and was called up for the full squad with team-mate Rachael Kelly, after three trial sessions in Lea Valley, London.

England fly out for a six-day camp on August 11 and play four games as the defender continues to enjoy success despite a long-standing knee problem and her transition from roller hockey.

She said: “I got into the sport after having a skiing accident when I was younger and watching the infamous Mighty Ducks movie on TV.

“I was persuaded by my father to try roller hockey first and didn’t try out ice hockey until about two and a half years ago, although had to curtail my first season owing to needing knee surgery, the third lot of knee surgery after a serious car accident eight years ago.

“The 2012-2013 season was my first full season in ice hockey and my first time trying out for England South along with Rachael.”
