CRICKET: Luton Sixth Form complete superb treble

The students have already claimed the Association of Colleges’ regional and national indoor championships this season, before adding the AoC T20 East of England/London regional crown to the trophy cabinet, after an action-packed finals day at South Woodford CC on Wednesday.

In their semi-final match against Walthamstow-based Sir George Monoux College, openers Kashif Ali and Awais Khan put on a 113-run partnership as Luton chased down a target of 157 with five wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.

Luton then faced NewVic Cricket Academy in the final after the East London side had defeated Uxbridge.

Playing without several of their county players, Luton nevertheless put up a huge score as they batted first.

Al was once again was superb and scored 123 not out, including 10 sixes and seven fours.

Hamzah Khan also had a brilliant cameo innings, hitting four consecutive sixes as Luton finished on 208-3, including an incredible 100 runs off the last five overs.

NewVic needed to come out firing on all cylinders for the run chase, but their reply got off to a disastrous start, losing two wickets in the opening over.

Partnerships of 60 and 65 for the third and fourth wickets gave them hope, but the target proved too much as NewVic scored 191-6.

Justin Pieris, cricket coach at Luton Sixth Form College, said: “The final was an amazing spectacle, a display of serious power hitting from both teams. Kashif was a different class.”
