Reeling at 32-4 in their County Championship Division Two contest, and with the top four all departing for single figure scores, the 21-year-old middle order batsman took control.

He scored a majestic 158 not out off 280 balls with 23 fours on the first day as Northants ended on 323-6.

Keogh then went on to complete his double century on the second day, eventually the last man out for 221, but Northants were well in command as they were dismissed for a hefty 438.

Keogh has been on the fringes of the senior side all season, making a handful of appearances, and head coach David Ripley was glad to see him make the most of his latest opportunity which came about because of an injury to Ben Duckett.

He said: “Watching Rob score those runs was a nice thing to see happen.

“He’ll never forget a thing like that and it was an excellent effort given that we were 20-odd for three when he went in.”

Having streaked past his previous best of 44, Keogh spent a lengthy period in the 90s and the notching of three-figure scores is something Ripley would like to see his charge make a habit of.

He continued: “He’s always looked a good player when he’s played in the first team and right from the time that he came to us.

“He averages about 50 in the seconds which shows that he’s consistent but he’s never been a prolific century scorer.

“Only one second XI hundred is disappointing for a player of his ability and that was why it was good to see him go on.”

Keogh has come through the County’s system, from age-group to Academy to second XI cricket and that fact is one that gives Ripley great satisfaction.

“There’s nothing better than seeing one of your own doing well,” he added.
