Pakistanis close in on Midweek League title

LUTON Pakistanis are on the brink of winning the Luton & District Midweek Cricket League Premier Division title after they overcame last year’s champions Luton Haiderys in a thrilling encounter.

Pakistanis, who are 18 points ahead of AKCC with only three games remaining, will face AKCC next week and if victorious, they could win the title, while Haiderys are certainly out of the race.

Batting first, Haiderys ended on 129-7 thanks to fine knocks from Hasan Parvez (28) and Rizwan Sadiq (41) with Tasir Hussain, 4-29, doing well with the ball.

Pakistanis lost early wickets but Mohammed Haroon (54) and Tahir Murtuza’s quickfire 59 sneaked victory for their side in the last over.

Kashmir Cavaliers, who were once a force in the Premier Division and have never dropped down a division in the history of the league, are facing relegation after they were beaten by Luton CC.

Cavaliers batted first and made 120-5 in their allotted overs, but Luton CC chased down the target to win by two wickets thanks to Ahsan Malik’s vital 42.

Luton CC still need a miracle to stay in the Premier Division though.

AKCC ended Hawks’ title hopes with a comfortable win after blasting 140-8, with Ghulam Rasool making 45 and Jitu Singh 29.

AKCC then put in an exceptional bowling performance as Fiaz Ahmed (5-18) ripped through Hawks’ batting line-up to restrict them to 102-9.

Lions CC moved a step closer to safety as they beat Luton Cricketers, who have been relegated.

Lions elected to bat first and got off to a decent start as Syed Toqueer (20) and Nazakat Khan (24) formed a useful partnership to get their team to a modest 92-7 with Basit Ali (3-15) bowling well.

In reply Cricketers struggled to get going as some brilliant bowling from MJ Shehzad (4-5) was well backed up by Afroz Khan (2-25) to skittle them out for 60.

Kingsway CC remain top of Division One after they beat The Saracens, who fell further down the table.

Kingsway elected to bat first and Gurdeep Jandu (78) maintained his remarkable form with the bat as he and Zahoor Rehman (31) helped their team to a massive 151-5 off their allotted overs.

The Saracens, who were in desperate need of a win to avoid the drop, had Taberaz Khan (61) in good touch, but that wasn’t enough.

As the run-rate rocketed, Ajab Khan continued the fight with an unbeaten 29 as Saracens fell just short on 130-6.

Luton Majestic stayed in second after beating nearest rivals Shaheen CC.

Majestic run machine Raza Iqbal blasted 82 to take his team to a huge total of 154-4.

Shaheen were then restricted to 92-9 as Iqbal completed a fine all-round showing with 2-18.

Luton Saracens recorded their fourth win of the season as they overcame Haidery Tigers.

Tigers were skittled out for just 99 with Tanvir Ahmed (4-19) bowling brilliantly.

Ahmed, 34 not out, then helped his team chase the target in 14 overs to win by eight wickets.

Luton United Stars smashed 143-4 against bottom placed Challney CC, Asfan Javed scoring a vital 33.

Stars then bowled with good discipline to restrict Challney to 84-9.

Stars are still in the relegation zone with just five matches remaining.
