Vaughan backs Monty for England return

FORMER England captain Michael Vaughan believes Luton spinner Monty Panesar deserves a Test recall.

He thinks England would be foolhardy to embark on their winter tour of the subcontinent, to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, without the services of Panesar, who took 69 championship wickets last season, as England’s second spinner.

He said: “Spin plays such a prominent role in that part of the world so I just hope they go with the next best and don’t go for someone like Samit Patel.

“I want them to go for the next best spinner and in my eyes that’s Monty Panesar.

“He went with England to the Ashes, he’s had a good year for Sussex and I don’t see how the selectors can change that.

“There’s no-one else with the quality of Panesar. If Swann got injured then you need your next best spinner. That’s Monty.”

Meanwhile, Panesar has committed his future to Sussex, by signing a three-year extension at the County Ground.

The new deal keeps him at the club until 2015 and Panesar said: “The club is going through an exciting period and I’m looking forward to helping them challenge for trophies

“I aim to repay their faith by continuing my good form whilst also improving my chances of reclaiming my place in the England side.”

The 29-year-old is also in line to make an appearance in the Sheffield Shield or the Big Bash events in Australia.

Panesar, who will be playing for Randwick Petersham, is in talks with Western Australia about playing in the Shield and could also be an international signing for Adelaide Strikers.
