Managers Alex Butler said: “0-0 was a fair result, with the whole team putting in a shift to earn a point.

“In the second period our defence showed their commitment throwing themselves into last-ditch tackles and keeping shots to a minimum, so all credit to them.

“Going forward we did not create as much as we normally should, but I will take the positives and this is four points off of one of the league’s top-performing teams.”

In a tentative first half of few chances, most of the play centre in midfield, with new AFC pairing of Jamie Magi and Gareth Harnaman gradually gaining the upper hand.

A couple of chances fell to BJ Christie, while Dan Ryan should have done better from a header following a George Hingley corner.

After a promising opening to the second half it was Colney who started to gain control, with their prolific strike pairing of Martin Collins and Matt Newman starting to cause problems.

However, AFC’s central defensive partnership of Ryan and Kyle Lincoln were equal to the task as they restricted Colney to scraps with Ryan Darby in the AFC goal rarely troubled.

In fact AFC had a chance to nick it when both Conner Smith and Christie went close in the closing stages as AFC had to settle for a point against hard-working Colney.

AFC Dunstable go to Berkhamsted in the second round of the Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup on Tuesday night.

Attendance: 45.
