Banton vows never to make the same mistake again

The 20-year-old had travelled with the Town side for the fixture at the League Two champions, but didn’t even make the bench with boss Nathan Jones admitting afterwards, Banton had missed out due to a lack of discipline.

Speaking for the first time about the incident, the teenager accepted responsibility for his actions and is determined not to make the same mistake again.

Banton said: “It was definitely a learning curve, as not only did I get, I wouldn’t say a hammering from Nathan Jones, he did bat me down and told me what I’d done wrong, and explained to me why that’s affected me, not being part of the squad, but I realised it affected other people as well.

“My dad was asking me as he was seeing it come up on the news, and saying ‘what’s going on?’

“You kind of feel like you’ve not just let yourself down, but you’ve let other people around you down.

“Even though, I’m not going to go into what it was, it wasn’t anything major, but a bit of discipline that I need to improve as sometimes my brain can be elsewhere.

“But my dad and people like that were disappointed as well, which wasn’t the best thing as you don’t want to see your family disappointed.

“They thought it was something more serious, but it was a learning curve that I’ll definitely improve from and won’t happen again.”

Banton did talk to his manager about the issue the following week and was relieved that Jones didn’t hold it against him, as he returned to the squad against Exeter.

He continued: “I went and spoke to him about it the following week in training and he said to me, the main thing was he was looking for was a reaction in training.

“Afterwards, he said to me ‘you were outstanding again in training, so that’s shown me that you’ve got a reaction.’

“He said keep doing that for the rest of the week and that showed that your reaction continued, and you’re not a sulker and you’ll be back in the squad at the weekend.

“I was, so he stuck to his word.”
