Blues full of belief as they prepare to tackle Rugby

FOOTBALL: Enthused Barton Rovers boss Dan Kennoy believes he now has a squad to compete in Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central.

Having picked up another point on Boxing Day with a 2-2 draw against neighbours Leighton Town, Rovers have now only lost twice in their last 13 matches.

That run has seen them climb away from the bottom of the table and they are now just five points off the play-off places.

The addition of Bobby Dance in October, plus the discovery of youngsters Niran Vaughan, Layne Eadie, Scott Joseph and Theo Swaine have strengthened Kennoy’s hand.

He said: “This time of year you need strength in depth and I believe we’ve finally got it.

“We’ve had injuries in recent weeks to Bobby and Russell Bull and it hasn’t affected our results.

“It’s starting to become hard to pick a starting 11 each week. Although the draw against Leighton was disappointing, we climbed a place in the league so you have to take the positives from it.”

Rovers will be looking to close that gap on the play-offs on New Year’s Eve with another home game against another side looking to mount a top five challenge, Rugby Town.

“We’re at home so we have to look at winning the game against Rugby,” continued Kennoy.

“They are level on points with us and it could be as simple as whoever wins this game will be the side that goes on to compete in the play-offs.”

The pair have drawn their last three encounters against each other, the last finishing 1-1 at Butlin Road back in August.

Kennoy added: “It’s going to be a very tough game for us as Rugby are a good side.

“I’m sure they’d have liked to have had a game closer to home on New Year’s Eve but that won’t deter them from being prepared as they are a big, big club in this league.”
