Blues triumph to remain the only unbeaten league team in the country

Creaking Dunstable Town eventually triumphed 2-1 at Biggleswade United in the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division on Saturday.

Dunstable are now the only unbeaten in the league in the country with 21 wins and five draws from 26 games.

Director of football John McLoughlin said: “Our achievement shows the character of the players of this football club and I would like to thank them personally and long may it continue.

“As for today’s result we showed great character as Biggleswade’s tactics were clear from the start and parked the bus early doors and they played it well, but after the break we showed our quality and had to be patient and Tony Fontenelle showed his experience to put us in front.

“Biggleswade came at us and a defensive error gave them a goal, but when you have the quality of Tony Burnett and Nick Jackson on your bench they can be called upon to change the game and to be fair to them they made a instant impact and helped us get the winner.

“We have a massive game next Saturday against our title contenders Oxhey Jets and I fancy this to be the title decider.”

The visitors were made to work hard for the points in a match that never really sparked with excitement.

Dunstable exerted the early pressure, but found their hosts in a mean defensive mood.

With chances falling to Nathan Frater and Bernard Christie the Blues sought to emphasise their superiority but, despite the pressure, the first half ended without goalless.

But, two minutes into the second half, makeshift right-back Tony Fontanelle took matters into his own hands and obeyed his natural instincts as a striker to give the Blues the lead.

After a scintillating run he fired home the opener through a crowded penalty area to find the bottom left corner with a firm, low shot.

Unfazed the home side scored a slightly fortuitous equaliser when Sean Murray’s cross from the right eluded everyone and trickled in at the far post on 55 minutes.

Dunstable, protecting their unbeaten 26-game unbeaten league run reapplied the pressure as the pace of substitutes Tony Burnett and Nick Jackson helped to add urgency to their repeated attacks.

Twelve corner kicks eventually bore fruit as Frater hooked in the winner after 75 minutes.

United had keeper Scott Waters to thank for keeping the score down with some inspired saves, while counterpart Paul Taylor was needed just once when Murray beat the off-side trap, but Taylor dived low to make the save.

The win keeps Dunstable five points clear of Oxhey Jets at the top, who still have a game in hand.

Tonight (Tuesday) Dunstable are due to entertain Tring Athletic, face a potential title decider at The Middlesex Stadium against Oxhey Jets on Saturday and entertain London Tigers on Tuesday night.
