Cook happy to serve up goals for Hatters

The summer arrival from Walsall has made no secret of the fact that his preferred role is either as a striker or just behind the front two, but faces stiff competition from the likes of Cameron McGeehan, who excelled in that number 10 position last season.

Cook was utilised on the left of Town’s attacking diamond against Walsall on Saturday there’s every chance he could be there again when Town take the field at Plymouth this weekend.

It’s a role he’s happy to play though, as the 26-year-old said: “I like being number 10 and up front, but the gaffer knows I’m versatile.

“I played left wing for Walsall in the first season I signed there. I played there for most of the season and got a lot of assists and a few goals.

“Today (Saturday) was a bit of a different role for me. I’ve never really played that one in my life, on the left hand side of the diamond, but I quite enjoy it.

“It’s tough work, but in any good team if you are working hard it makes it a lot easier for the whole team, it’s just more fluent when you’ve got four blokes in the middle of the pitch who can pass it and move it.

“I know Cam’s a great finisher. The gaffer really wants me to play in and around him and sometimes even up front with Danny (Hylton) or Jack (Marriott), which is my preferred position.

“But the position I played I felt comfortable in it. As long as I can get the chance to get forward and supply, which a few people have seen I can do, it’s all about the team at the end of the day.

“So if it means I’ve got to pass to Cameron 14 times, 15 times, 16 times then I’ll pass to him, as long as he puts it away, that’s the main thing.

“As long as we score more goals than the opposition then we’re going to win, so that’s a big bonus for us.

“As long as I’m playing, I’m happy. If you ask most professional footballers, as long as they’re playing, they’re happy.”

The former Sunderland youngster looks to be very much in the mould of what boss Jones is trying to create at Kenilworth Road during his tenure, with Town playing a far more possession based game this term.

Cook continued: “I think that’s where the gaffer has done well in recruiting people. He’s got players in that actually want the ball and want to pass the ball.

“He’s obviously got two good threats up front at the minute and there are threats on the bench, if we need them. I think we’ve got goals in the team and I think we’ll definitely score goals in this league. A lot.

“Everyone is good on the ball, everyone wants the ball and that’s the main thing.”

Cook still wants to weigh in with his fair share of strikes wherever possible though, as he added: “Goals, That’s what I want, goals in this team.

“Wherever I’m playing I always try to get into the box and around the box.

“My work ethic as well, I think that’s why the gaffer likes me. I have to calm myself down sometimes because I might get carried away and get attracted to the ball too much, but it’s just (about) goals for me, and assists. Helping the team to win games, that’s the main thing.”
