The 26-year-old was at Kenilworth Road back in May 2007, watching his home-town club Sunderland play Luton in the second tier of English football, with the Black Cats running out 5-0 winners that day.

When asked about a potential return to that level, Cook, who signed a two year contract with Town after leaving Walsall during the summer, said: “I think that’s definitely the aim, but we’ve got to take it one step at a time.

“We’ve got to make sure we get promoted this season and do as best we can to do that, then next season go again.

“The squad that we’ve got is I think capable of playing in League One, and the players we’ve got, we’ve got some great players.

“I don’t even think there would have to be a massive change up either. Obviously the manager would probably want to bring in additions if we do get promoted, but we’ve got to take it one step at a time and make sure that this season is our priority.”

Although Cook only joined last week, he was with the club on their pre-season tour to Hungary and has been very impressed with the squad in place.

He added: “It’s very, very good. I sort of knew when I saw the players before I signed, that it must be a good team and then came here and have seen it for myself now and you can just tell.

“There’s a few different ways that the gaffer wants us to play, depending on who we’re playing and what we think their weaknesses are.

“But we’ve got the personnel, anyone can play in different positions and you can switch formations during the game if needs be, so the team looks very strong.”
