England Colleges call on talented young stopper

CENTRAL Bedfordshire College football development student Ryan Darby has been selected to attend the final stages of the prestigious four-day English Colleges trials at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, Shropshire, in December.

From the trial the national squad will be announced and the England side will go on tour in Italy to play a series of Serie A and Serie B sides.

In previous year players have been signed by Italian teams on professional contracts, and football development manager Colin Sharpe said: “I am really pleased for Ryan with his achievements both on the field and in the classroom where he is achieving top grades.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Ryan to showcase his ability, he has all of the college behind him, wishing him the best of luck.

“We weren’t originally Ryan’s first choice after school as he had previously attended a sixth form college studying A-levels, but he soon realised that this was not for him and to play football every day and still be able to progress to university he decided to come to Central Bedfordshire College.”

The Luton born and bred keeper attended two trials before being selected at the final southern trial at Hayes and Yeading Football Club earlier this month.

All colleges in the south of England entered up to three of their best players at the start and the process of elimination began.

The head coach of the south selection process, Laurie Carter, also praised Darby, with Sharpe saying: “Ryan was the best unsigned U19 goalkeeper that he had seen at the trials and would be going into the final stage as his number one keeper.”

Darby added: “It was a really special moment when I heard the news, I was surprised and ecstatic.

“It was such a good feeling, and to make it better by hearing it in front of my team-mates made it that bit more special. The nearer it gets to the date of the trial the more nervous I get.

“But I am determined to succeed and get into the squad – not only for myself but also for the college and in particular Colin who have supported me fully throughout my two years here at Central Bedfordshire College, it’s a great place to be with lots of opportunities.”
