Gunners keeper wants to prove himself with Luton

Competition amongst the goalkeepers at Kenilworth Road is keeping Matt Macey firmly on his toes as he looks to prove to any naysayers that he has what it takes.

The on-loan Arsenal stopper has been preferred to Reading’s Stuart Moore for the last seven games and on his stint with the club so far, he said: “I’ve been here five weeks now and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with all the boys.

“We’ve got a good goalkeeping unit and we’re pushing each other day in day out.

“When Stu was playing when I first came in, I was applying the pressure because that’s what the manager wants and what the club wants, that healthy competition, because you play better.

“Now I’m playing and Stu and Kingy (Craig King) and Goochy (Liam Gooch) are working hard to put the pressure on me, so that’s a positive.”

Macey is well aware that he has to keep maintaining his level of performance though, adding: “It’s football, you never comfortable and you’re two or three bad games from having to change it. I know that, I understand that. It’s a cut throat world of football, so that obviously means I’ve got to be at my best.”

“That’s the idea, for me personally, I came here to prove people that I’m a good goalkeeper, to win games, my second loan, my first loan was part of a development, mentally I’m not here to develop, I’m here to win games.”

Macey kept a first clean sheets away from home during Saturday’s 4-0 win at Yeovil and a second in total, making a superb save from Shayon Harrison with the scores at 3-0.

Boss Nathan Jones added: “It was a crucial one, as it was just once we lapsed really. It was a cut back and he stood big and made a great save, which was important as if they go 3-1 there it gives them a little bit of impetus.

“But he’s in good form at the minute and we’re pleased for him. It’s another clean sheet and that’s important for him.”
