Harford ready to help shape Luton Town's future

The 56-year-old has now had just about every role going at Kenilworth Road, scoring 92 goals during 217 appearances as a player, while having spells as coach, assistant boss and also manager too.

On what his new position entails, Harford said: “It’s nice to be around some good football people again and I just see myself as part of a new management team trying to get Luton back to a better level.

“In terms of getting to a better level you need to progress with better players.

“It’s going to be difficult, going to be hard, we know that, but I’ve been with the analyst, just sorting things out.

“There isn’t a great scouting network, and to implement a scouting network, it costs money.

“We’ve got to be a bit frugal and careful to spend the money wisely. Hopefully we’ll spend it wisely and bring in the right type of player.

“It’s a slow process, but I’ve been very impressed with Nathan (Jones) and the way he’s going about his business.

“He’s been very patient, and I know for a fact that if and when we do bring players, they’ll be the right ones.”

Harford believes there needs to be the right mix of players at the club if success is to be achieved as he continued: “You’ve got to have the balance right, of young, hungry players who want to succeed and want to get on, balanced with the experience of players who’ve been there, seen it and done it.

“So it’s a balancing act and it all goes within a budget. We haven’t got massive amounts of money to spend, we know that and respect that.

“It will hopefully be a well judged squad we can put together, but it’s going to take time and we’ve got to be patient.”
