Hatful of goals for Blues

DUNSTABLE Town responded to their disappointing exit from the FA Vase by securing a comfortable 6-2 win against lowly Hatfield Town in Molten Spartan SML Premier on Tuesday night.

Two goals from Peter Holmes and Matthew Judge, who was also the provider for two, was more than enough for victory. But the result still leaves the Blues eight points adrift of leaders Royston Town, with just one game in hand. Director of football John McLoughlin said: “After the disappointment of losing on Saturday we decided to change the starting line-up last night as we move forward on our promotion campaign.

“We have signed Danny Mead from Biggleswade Town. Meadie is a left-back with great ability and someone I chased in pre-season. I have always been a fan of him during our days with Aylesbury United and gaining promotion with Aylesbury FC. Danny went straight into the side last night and performed as expected. Meadie will be a great asset to the club.

“The front two of Judge and Lee Roache was very lively and they worked well together, Leon Fisher got his first start and made an impact and with Jonathan Cooper and Nick Jackson back in the side we looked very impressive.

“In fairness all six goals last night were quality and we should be full of confidence going into our derby game on Saturday against AFC Dunstable.”

The Blues reclaimed second spot with a determined, attacking display, taking the lead in the fifth minute when Fisher converted a short pass from Judge in the penalty area. Town were given time and space as they had two goals ruled out in the first half.

Judge set up Roache to score the second goal before half-time as the score ballooned in the second half.

Slicing through Hatfield at will, Judge bagged a third after 52 minutes and again set up Roache for the fourth on the hour mark. Hatfield pulled one back courtesy of Ashley Dray, while Holmes nutmegged the keeper for the Blues’ fifth. Substitute Derren Thompson seized on some slack play to pull another back, but a Holmes free-kick capped a great win for the Blues.

On Saturday, Town fell 4-0 behind at Long Buckby in the second round of the FA Vase and, while Judge and Nathan Frater were on target, it wasn’t enough as they crashed out 4-2.

This Saturday the Dunstable derby between AFC and Town will help to officially open Creasey Park, kick-off 3pm. Then, on Tuesday, Town travel to Oxhey Jets.
