Hatters boss wants fans to have pride in his side

The former Brighton & Hove Albion first team coach will take charge of his team for the first time at home to Cambridge United this weekend.

When asked what supporters could expect during his tenure, Jones said: “I have a philosophy on how I want to play, but I also want to win football matches.

“I would like to play a style of football that the fans can be proud of.

“I want to put out a team that wears the badge with pride, with graft and want the fans to be able to relate to the players that we have and we bring in.

“When they see how we play, I’d like the fans to be happy. Now a lot of things depend on that, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m not going to promise this is what we’re going to do, because no, things change, things happen, you adapt.

“But we have a good group of players here, with a good work ethic and we’ll harness that and use it.”

It’s clear that Jones’ coaching background is something he is determined to bring to his role as manager, as he added: “When we say improve the squad we don’t just mean bring in different, higher paid, more expensive players, that’s not it.

“There’s players here who are good players, lots of them, and we’re going to try and improve those, try and get the best out of those in whatever system we play.

“Yes we want to be ambitious, if we want to go to different levels then things need to be different, things need to improve in terms of the facilities and a little bit of the infrastructure and so on.

“That’s what Gary (Sweet) and the board and the good people around the club are looking to do and that can only benefit it.

“The club has always had the potential and there’s been a transition obviously in terms of the club going through a little bit of hard times.

“Now the stability is in place, I think it’s time they take steps forwards.

“The previous manager has taken great steps in terms of getting the club back into the league, he needs a lot of praise for that and a lot of accolades.

“But now we’re in a place where hopefully we can move forward again.”
