Hatters boss won't let Town's season peter out

The Hatters players had given themselves every chance of extending their campaign past May 7 when victory at Leyton Orient last month put them just three points away from the play-offs.

However, a run of three defeat in four games since has seen Luton drop to eight points adrift, but although the task in hand now looks extremely unlikely, Jones isn’t going to let his squad start take their eye off the ball.

He said: “We’ve always said we’ve taken every game as it comes and I don’t want this season to peter out.

“I’m not that type of person and it would be too easy to say ‘we’ll plan for next year, we’ll do this, we’ll do that.’

“No, we’re not, we’ve still got a lot to play for, none more so than home games, in front of our fans.

“We want to be positive, we want to keep moving forward, so that at the start of next season it’s not a massive overhaul, it’s not like we’re starting over again.

“What I’m concerned about is now, that we continue building, we continue making small steps and that starts again or continues on Saturday against Accrington.

“This is three or four months of groundwork that will take us forward, so we want to move forward and we’re looking for as much positivity and as many positive results and points as possible.”

Hatters have had a good recent record against top 10 sides, winning at Wycombe, Orient and Plymouth since Jones took over and he wants that to carry on this weekend, with Accrington sitting an impressive fifth in the table.

He added: “I hope that continues because we’ve got some good games coming up and some good teams to play.

“But up until the last week I’ve been more than encouraged from what I’ve seen from what we have here and we can move forward.

“I’ve been a little bit disappointed with the last two games as we’ve come out of them with no points when I felt we should have come out of them with points.

“Maybe not the last game, we didn’t deserve to win the last game, but if we’d have been a little bit more productive in the Barnet game and then written off the last game and taken a point, then we’d been sitting in a lot better position, but it wasn’t to be.

“I’ve been encouraged generally on the whole by all of our performances, just last week put a little cloud on it.”
