The U16s were due to play St Albans City North on Saturday but the opposition forfeited the game and, as a result, Town claimed the three points required to become champions.

The Hatters have enjoyed a successful season, winning 17 out of their 19 games played so far.

Manager Steve Worrell admitted that the campaign went better than he anticipated and everyone involved is thrilled with the achievement.

He said: “It feels really good, given that this was our first season in charge and having had to rebuild the squad a bit.

“Myself, my assistant and the girls were thrilled to have wrapped it up with two games still to go and the season has gone better than expected to be honest. “We brought in a few new girls, who added to the quality that we already had.

“We thought we had a good chance at the beginning of the season, but we knew there were still some strong teams in the league, so we knew it was never going to be a foregone conclusion.”

Apart from just one defeat suffered against Enfield Town and a draw against Harvesters, the Hatters have collected maximum points all season and Worrell admitted that the team have done an incredible job.

He continued: “The girls have done incredibly well so far and surpassed all our expectations.

“We just want to see the season out with hopefully only the one loss to our name.

“As the season has progressed the team have had to work very hard.

“Having been at the top of the league for most of the season and also being unbeaten, every team has tried that bit harder to beat us and be the ones to take our unbeaten record away.”

Town now have just two league games remaining against Hitchin Belles and Harvesters, as Worrell acknowledged that the team still have a job to do and he hopes to continue the winning streak.

He added: “For us it is important to try to win these games to finish the season in the right way which will hopefully set us up going in to the league cup final.

“Mick and myself shouldn’t need to motivate the players too much for the remaining games, as they know what is at stake and have done very well at motivating themselves within the group throughout the course of the season so far.”
