The 29-year-old, who can play at centre-half or left-back, has found opportunities limited at Valley Parade since joining the Bantams in 2014, making with just three appearances this term, having spent five months on loan with Notts County, scoring twice in 14 games.

Sheehan clocked up his 300th senior career appearance in December while in his second spell at Meadow Lane, having featured 127 times for the Magpies during 2011-2014.

The ex-Republic of Ireland U21 international began his career at Leicester City and then moved to Leeds and Swindon before his first spell at Notts County.

On his first signing, Hatters boss Nathan Jones said: “He’s a player I’ve known for a long time and a player who I earmarked to join us.

“Alan will bring quality, balance and experience to our squad and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Sheehan goes straight into the Town squad to face Mansfield on Saturday and has been given squad number 44.
