Luton Town were beaten 2-1 by League Two rivals Cambridge United in their Final Third Development League clash at Kenilworth Road this afternoon.

Both sides named strong starting 11s, with Paul Benson, Alex Lacey, Fraser Franks and Ryan Hall all gaining valuable minutes.

Benson was close early on, with keeper Will Norris just beating the striker to Luke Rooney’s pass.

The visitors almost opened the scoring as Johnny Hunt broke forward but shot inches wide.

Alex Wall set his sights too, firing narrowly over the top, while Franks had a free header from Rooney’s corner, but couldn’t generate enough power to beat Norris.

Luke Chadwick looped a header over for the U’s. while Hunt curled a glorious effort against the inside of the post.

Benson’s effort flew narrowly over the top, but the U’s were in front on 41 minutes when Hunt played in Sully Kaikai who brushed off Luke Trotman and slotted past Craig King.

Luton were level immediately in comedic fashion though when under no pressure, Dominc Ball side-footed past his own keeper.

It should have been 2-1 to Cambridge as Kaikai put Jordan Chiedozie clean through only to sidefoot wide.

In the second period, Benson went close from Robinson’s run and cross, but Norris clung on, before repelling Hall’s fierce blast.

The visitors moved 2-1 in front on 66 minutes as Franks couldn’t halt Jame Akintunde’s run and he coolly found the bottom corner.

Town try to mount an immediate response as Hall crossed and Andy Parry’s headed at Norris.

King then made a brilliant finger tip stop to deflect Chiedozie’s effort onto the bar, while Kaikai dragged inches wide.

Paul Connolly missed a golden chance to make it 2-2 in the last minute, as his header from eight yards bounced straight into Norris’ gloves.

Hatters: King, Trotman, Connolly, Lacey, Franks, Robinson, Parry, Hall, Rooney, Benson, Wall (Lafayette 60).
