Competition at the back will drive young defender Alex Lacey on as he bids for a return to Town’s first team after recovering from a broken metatarsal, writes Mark Wood.

Since picking up that injury against Southport on November 26 competition for places in central defence at Kenilworth Road has increased dramatically.

Crystal Palace youngster Ryan Inniss had been partnering the experienced Steve McNulty in the heart of the Hatters’ defence before his return, Fraser Franks has signed permanently from Welling United and experienced centre-half Anthony Charles is now fully fit.

Lacey said: “I think it drives us all to be better players and I think we really thrive off the competition as defenders.

“It just give you more motivation to try and get back.”
