Hylton relishing the battle to lead the line for Luton

The 27-year-old penned a two year deal at Kenilworth Road recently after a highly successful stint at rivals Oxford United, scoring 30 goals in two seasons.

However, he doesn’t just expect to walk straight into the Hatters side ahead of the club’s other strikers, as he said: “I know Jack Marriott did very well last season as I saw some of the goals he scored and he looks very lively.

“There’s Craig Mackail-Smith there too and there’s so many good players, which is healthy as there’s going to be great competition.

“I’m going to want to play, he’s going to want to play, everyone’s going to want to play.

“We’re going to have to push each other ever day in training and if you’ve got the shirt, you’ve got to try and go and do the business.

“If there’s someone else in front of you, you’ve got to push them all the way and give them a pat on the back if they are doing it.

“It all puts us in good stead to have a good season, we need competition, we need good players in the squad and that’s what we’ve got.”

On the characteristics he will bring to the squad this season, Hylton continued: “It’s really simple, I just try and give 110 per cent every single game and I believe if you do that, then the rest is natural.

“If you’re running round working hard then the rest of the game will come.

“You’ll find yourself having good touches and making good decisions, so I’ll do that and just try and score as many goals as I can when the chances arrive.

“If you’ve got 11 players doing that then you’ve got a real chance of being successful in this league. Sometimes it won’t always go our way, sometimes we may be losing games or having a bad spell in games, but if you keep working hard then I’m sure the fans will appreciate that.”

Although he has been used as more of a target man in the past, Hylton is confident he will have no issues at all in adapting to boss Nathan Jones’ more possession-based game at Luton.

He said: “I hope so, sometimes you’re going to have go to direct in games but it’s not the way we all want to play football and I don’t think the fans want to see the game played like that either.

“If we can get the ball down and play, and pass teams off the park then I’d be delighted to be part of that, while I’m sure the fans will appreciate it too. I’m looking forward to learning under the gaffer.

“He’s been at a good level and I know from talking to other people who have been at clubs where he has, they say he’s a top, top coach and I’m looking forward to trying to improve and seeing how far we can go.”

Hylton is more aware than most what is required to enjoy a promotion-winning term after finishing second with Oxford last term and believes that both himself and fellow new addition Johnny Mullins’ experience of going up, can only be a plus to the Town side this term.

He said: “It definitely will help. Sometimes you might be winning a few games and then might go on a bit of a bad spell and think ‘oh no, it’s all over.’

“But when we had a few bad games at Oxford, we just always knew to remain level, never too high, never too low.

“We knew we had to be on it every single day in training, every single game. We thought we had a great season, but only ended up getting promoted by one point on the last day of the season, so it shows how tough this league is.

“We’re going to have to make sure we’re at it every single day. I’m sure the gaffer will get that across to us, we’ve got some other experienced boys in there too and if we do that, then we’ll do really well.”
