Hylton thrilled to get off the mark early on for Hatters

The forward, who joined from Oxford United in the summer, opened the scoring against the Pilgrims in a 3-0 win, slamming home from close range.

The 27-year-old said: “You always want to score in every game you play.

“If I don’t score I’ll just try to bring as much to the team as I can, whether that is working hard, creating space for other people or getting assists. I’ll just try to play as well as I can.

“Of course I’d like to score every game, but if I can’t then I’ll try to do those things.

On the goal, which arrived, from Stephen O’Donnell’s cross lovely cross that was missed by Jack Marriott, before Hylton slammed home, he continued: “It was nice, SODs put a good ball in, Jack has got across his man and it’s maybe a bit lucky, but the man has blocked it, it has come off his arm, otherwise Jack probably scores there.

“Luckily it has bounced down to me in the box and I just managed to get good contact and score.”

The manner of the striker certainly left Hatters boss Nathan Jones mightily happy too, as he said: “I’m pleased on that for probably more reasons than I can tell you now.

“I’m pleased with my staff as Danny was quite dominant in the air, but we didn’t feel we would be dominant in the air, so we thought a different kind of approach in our delivery into the box.

“Jack should have scored the goal, but it bounced back and Danny was clinical.

“I’m glad that he’s scored, because he’s actually been beating himself up in pre-season for not being as prolific as he would like. But he was outstanding, his performance upfront was just wonderful.”

Meanwhile, Town skipper Scott Cuthbert was delighted to be lining up alongside Hylton in a Luton shirt this year, having witnessed first hand just how difficult he is to play against, adding: “When a striker comes in, you know he’ll always work hard and get chances – and it’s never been a worry with Hylts.

“He’s that type of player, he’s so positive, so bubbly on and off the pitch, you had no worries about him not scoring.

“He was outstanding and I can tell from playing against him in training every day he’s an absolute nuisance – elbows flying everywhere, strong as anything, tackles everywhere.

“Certainly a nightmare to play against, but he’s brilliant to have in your team.
