Luton boss Nathan Jones has reiterated his desire to create his own history with the Hatters this season as they close in on a highest Championship points total for 15 years.

Back in the 2005-06 campaign, a Town team containing the likes of Steve Howard, Ahmet Brkovic and Carlos Edwards managed to finish 10th in the second tier with 61 points to their name.

With five games to go, the current crop at Kenilworth Road are already on 56 and know that just two wins would see them rise above that tally.

It wasn’t something that was in Jones’ immediate thoughts though, as the manager said: “I didn’t know that, we have our own points target whatever that is.

“The points target initially was to get to 51 points, not because 51 keeps you up but 51 is where we finished last year.

“For us to progress and for it to be classed as a progressive season, then we have to get to 51 points.

“We did that a few games ago, we got close to it and then the last two games we have surpassed it.

“That is all we want to do – progress.

“The Championship is different, harder now, we don’t want to beat things we have done before, we want to create our own history and that is what we are looking to do.

“It is all about progression this year.”

The Hatters are back on home soil this evening when they entertain Reading, hunting for a third straight win for the first time this term, and since they won promotion back to the second tier in 2019.

However, Jones was looking further than that, adding: “We would like to get four, we want to go and win on the weekend as well.

“We would like to go on a run and do that, at the minute because of the way the Championship is, the consistency levels needed and the talent of teams in it.

“It is not like we have been lucky in games, we have pretty much won the games we have deserved to, lost the ones we deserved to and probably drawn some that we have deserved to win.

“At the end of the day, if I could win two out of three games every single month, I would be delighted.

“It is not the fact we want to get to three wins, we want to win the next game and it just happens that it would be three wins on the bounce.

“For whatever motivation, the important thing for us is to try and get to 59 points.”
