Jones denies any approach from Posh for Tyler

The 38-year-old was quoted in the Peterborough Telegraph, claiming he was ‘gutted’ that the Hatters had blocked his move back to London Road, a club where he played 486 times during a 16-year stay.

However, Jones revealed that he hadn’t been contacted by Posh about a deal for the keeper, with only striker Paul Benson receiving any firm interest before the window closed on Monday night.

He said: “We had no enquiries, no approaches whatsoever, no-one came to me and said ‘we want to take this player.’

“If Peterborough United wanted anyone of our players, then they come and say ‘we want that player’.

“We will then evaluate the situation and if we think that it is a deal we can do, then we might do it.

“At Luton Town, we go through the front door. What we do is we say ‘we want that player, or we like that person, can we have him? What’s he going to cost’ and so on.

“We don’t do that. Mark Tyler has come out and said he’s gutted we didn’t give him the opportunity, I spoke to Mark Tyler last week, he never told me he wanted to go.

“I told him where he fitted into my plans here, we had a fine conversation, that’s how it is.”

When asked if he was disappointed that Tyler, who was on the bench once more for tonight’s 1-1 draw against Yeovil, spoke to the press about his situation, rather than keeping it in-house, Jones continued: “If I’ve got an issue with Mark Tyler, I’ll speak to Mark Tyler.

“We’re both old enough and experienced enough to sort this out in the right way possible. If I’ve got a problem with Mark I’ll speak to Mark, no problem there.

“There’s absolutely no issue whatsoever, but if anyone doesn’t want to be here, then come and see me.

“If anyone like Peterborough United want one our players, then go through the front door, come in and say, ‘we want your player.’

“We’ll have a value for any player and we’ll speak to people, we’re open. What we don’t do is go through the back door, or come out and stay stuff in the press that isn’t true.

“But I reiterate to any club, if you want any Luton Town players, come through the front door, because that’s what Luton Town do.”

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony took to Twitter too, writing: “I always said I’d bring Tyle’s home & I will one day. He’s a class act & one of our own.”

When asked about the tweet, Jones added: “I didn’t actually read Twitter because I’ve come off Twitter. I don’t know what the chairman said, so I don’t really want to comment.

“But if the chairman of Peterborough United wants Mark Tyler then tell him to come to Luton Town, through the front door and then we can speak to him, no problem.

“Whether we agree to let him go, or not, there’s a way of doing things, and we do it right at Luton Town.”
