Jones doesn't want any scapegoats as he calls on Town fans to unite

Luton Town boss Nathan Jones has called on fans not to make any '˜scapegoats' during the run-in to the season after a section of supporters appeared to turn on Olly Lee during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Colchester.

When the midfielder was introduced around the 70th minute mark for the injured Jordan Cook, some fans began chanting towards the former Birmingham City midfielder.

After being asked about the singing from the away end during today’s press conference, Jones said: “Fans sometimes find someone and they get it, I’ve got to be honest with you, it was me when I was a player, especially at Yeovil.

“I had a great relationship with the fans at Yeovil, but when things go wrong, because I was aging, because I was player assistant manager, they turned on me.

“So I didn’t hear it (on Saturday), but if that’s the case that’s them, it doesn’t help anyone, but Olly’s strong enough to come through that.”

Lee has made 32 appearances for Town this season and Jones admitted he wouldn’t be swayed in any perceived criticism of his player when it comes to team selection.

He added: “It won’t affect what I do, in terms of who I pick, but I urge the fans, this is a real time now where we can come through it.

“Olly’s done really well this year, if you look at our best, I’ve made our philosophy video this week and Olly plays a massive, massive part in that, in terms of how we play, how we handle the ball, he’s been a big thing.

“So I urge the fans, look, we’ve changed the playing style, we’ve needed people like Olly to do that, so let’s have a positive seven games.

“We’ve got seven games to do something and we want to give them something, we want to do something ourselves, but we want to give the fans something.

“So it’s a time to unite now, not to have a little scapegoat or anything.

“Let’s get behind everyone, let’s have a positivity. We’ve got a big game on the weekend, let’s get a big crowd there and let’s see if we can’t finish on a real high this season.”
