Jones knows Hatters will have to play the conditions in Wales

The Luton chief takes his side to the relegation-threatened Exiles to play on what is an awful surface at Rodney Parade this evening.

Although, Jones knows they will have to some slight alterations to their gameplan, he won’t be making drastic change, saying: “They’ll be a very, very difficult side, it’s a difficult surface down there and any time you go into Wales it’s a difficult game regardless of who you play.

“It’s bound to be adverse weather because it’s Wales, so we’ll set out our team to make sure we play the conditions.

“It might not be a fluent game, but what it will be is a hard working game and a combative game, sod what we’ve got to make sure is we’re right up there.

“We’ll probably have to tweak certain things but we can’t detract too far because we can’t ask dogs to be cats overnight, we still have to play our own way.

“Now we’ve done that in recent weeks anyway, so we’re going there in a decent run of form.

“We need to pick up more wins as that’s down to a clinical edge as I think we have enough chances to win games and we’re in a decent place.”

One thing that Jones is after is a better end product from his side, after watching yet another draw on Saturday against Exeter, their 14th of the campaign.

He added: “Our final ball was lacking from a lot, as we lacked a cutting edge.

“We got into real good areas, we really did and that’s what we need to turn into goals.

“We see some of the goals other people score, we don’t necessarily score those.

“If we score goals it’s usually a good goal and I don’t mean to be big headed by that, but we don’t usually score deflections and lucky goals. Maybe that’s a certain element of how we play as well.

“We asked them to play a different way, ask them to create and invariably we do that.

“What we have lacked in recent weeks is that bit of killer instinct, but they’re hungry, they want to do well. We’ve got a great group and they’re ready for this run in.”

A win would put Luton just three points behind third placed Portsmouth with eight games to go and Jones knows it’s now or never for his side to mount their charge for automatic promotion.

He added: “I won’t be expecting three points, what I will be is very much preparing to get three points as we need three points.

“This is now where we take advantage and that puts us right in amongst it with the game we have. There’s some good games coming up, good competitive games, so we’ve just got to take advantage of our opportunities.

“We had a goal at the beginning of the year, we’re very much on track to do that, it’s just the frustration levels from especially our home games missing opportunities is high.

“We’ve been very consistent in our performances, without having at times the clinical edge to win games, if we had that then we’d be a lot more comfortable than we are.

“But we’re still in the hunt, we’re a young group, we’re a developing group, they give me everything, give the fans everything. We don’t lose many games, but now it’s turning the draws into wins.

“We’ve got nine games to be as positive as we probably can and that’s what we’ve got to do. It starts with a very, very, very, very difficult fixture and that’s all we’re looking for.”
