Lawless relieved to get the nod from Jones

Hatters midfielder Alex Lawless revealed being named in new Town boss Nathan Jones' first starting line-up at the weekend was a huge boost to his confidence.

The Welshman was selected alongside Jonathan Smith in the heart of Town’s midfield as they were held to a goalless draw at Kenilworth Road by Cambridge United.

On his inclusion, Lawless said: “It’s a huge confidence booster for me and then you just want to do your very best to make sure that you prove him (Jones) right for giving you that chance.

“If anything you want to thank him for giving you that chance and you want to do your best, so hopefully I can get another opportunity to play there.

“It’s a huge thing for a new manager when he comes in and you play the first game, because I’ve seen players, and it happened to me a long time ago, where sometimes if your face doesn’t fit.

“It’s a difficult thing to swallow, so hopefully I’ve got off to the right start with him.

“It’s up to me now to whatever made him decide to play me, that I can prove him right and make sure he hasn’t got that decision to make as I love playing for this club and am desperate to carry on playing for this club regularly.

“Especially now the new gaffer is here, hopefully I’ll keep getting opportunities and that can happen.”

Jones has already admitted that he needs to reduce the size of the squad, and Lawless felt that having over 30 professionals can have its downfalls.

He continued: “I think it’s difficult, it’s difficult to keep players happy.

“It’s up to players to be professional and do right, but there’s different personalities in the squad, very different personalities.

“So the more different you’ve got, the harder it becomes. If I was a manager, I wouldn’t want to have to deal with that, I know that.”
