Luton boss remains tight-lipped over Benson's future

The 36-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, gave an interview to the Barking & Dagenham Post last week, where he confirmed he might be interested in a return to former club Dagenham & Redbridge, now managed by ex-Town boss John Still.

When asked whether Benson, who has scored 25 goals in 84 games for Luton, would be remaining at the club this summer though, Jones said: “Me and Benno have had a conversation, I’ve spoken to Benno which will remain in house.

“Benno trains really well, he’s been really important part of the squad and gives us options as he did brilliantly when he played at Plymouth recently.

“He had opportunities to move, and we decided it would better that he stayed here.

“So what I feel about Benno and he knows exactly how I feel and we’ll keep that in house, but Benno has been a fantastic servant for the club and whether it’s here or somewhere else, he’s got plenty left in him yet.”

Jones also reiterated that he was getting closer to finalising the squad he wants available going into next season, and that Town need to use whatever momentum they can from the final four games to put them in a good place for the new campaign.

He added: “I know near enough who I want, there’s one or two that I need to find out a bit about and so on moving forward, but I know near enough I who want to move forward with.

“It’s just there are one or two decisions to be made and it will be a summer of trying to improve what we have here, but the season is not over yet and we still have three weeks and four games to try and continue that momentum, as I want to finish as strong as possible.

“Because Oxford did that last year and I compare us a little bit with Oxford as Michael Appleton was able to go in and evaluate and do certain things.

“They finished very strongly and then that momentum carried them into this season, and I want whatever happens, for that momentum to stay with us through the summer and on to next season.”
