Luton boss still looking to improve squad

The Luton chief has already brought in Bradford City defender Alan Sheehan on loan until the end of the campaign, while Luke Guttridge and Luke Wilkinson have been allowed to leave too, joining Dagenham and Stevenage respectively.

When asked if there would be further movement before the deadline, Jones said: “We’ve got a big squad and all we can do is try and improve that squad in terms of quality, in terms of the bodies we get in.

“Now if there’s opportunities to move people on, we will. We won’t be adding bodies for the sake of bodies and anyone who comes in as you saw with Alan Sheehan, has to improve our 11, and if they do that then we can look to do something.

“I’m looking to improve the squad, so to improve the squad we have to one, get numbers down, but two, add a little bit of quality.”

On the decision to allow Wilkinson to join League Two rivals Stevenage and bring Sheehan in to replace him, Jones continued: “We lost Luke to Stevenage and we bought in Alan Sheehan and to do that we had to lose a good player in Luke, who we wish all the best to.

“He’s been an excellent, excellent player for Luton and since I’ve come in his attitude has been superb, but to do that adjustments we have to make tough decisions and that was one we made and hopefully that was a good one.

“It was a decision I took to bring in Alan Sheehan or to replace Luke with Alan Sheehan, now maybe some people are surprised by that, well that’s fine, I’m not.

“I know Alan Sheehan, I know what he can bring and hopefully we saw glimpses of that. I don’t think I need to justify anything as I think Alan Sheehan is an excellent, above the level player, he’s not a League Two player, he’s above the level and that’s the player we’re looking to bring in.

“We’re not looking to move back or to accommodate, we’re looking to move forward and some tough decisions will be made.

“But players are working and grafting for their future and up until now they’ve been outstanding. Their application, you can see that, other things will take time to change, but I’ve got a group that want to change, want to work, want to get better, so if they don’t it’s my fault.”
