New Luton striker Elijah Adebayo is looking forward to showing Huddersfield Town just what they missed out on if he gets his Hatters debut against the Terriers this weekend.

The 23-year-old, who moved to Kenilworth Road from Walsall for an undisclosed fee on Monday, had been a target for The John Smith’s Stadium club, which would have seen him lining up against Luton on Saturday, only to see that move fall through during deadline day.

He was then snapped up by Town boss Nathan Jones instead and on facing the side he might have been playing for, Adebayo said: “If I end up getting my chance I’ll be looking forward to it and definitely be showing them what they’re missing.”

Having started Monday with the Saddlers, speaking about his move to Bedfordshire, Adebayo who scored 10 goals in 28 appearances this term, said: “I wasn’t expecting it at all, it was kind of smash and grab really.

“I got a call about half five, by that point I thought I was staying at Walsall, but I’m delighted to be here now, that it’s got over the line.

“It was like, ‘you might be going here, you might be going there.’

“Then I kind of got told, ‘you never know, just keep your phone on and we’ll see what comes later on.’

“Huddersfield was the prime destination as well, but that didn’t quite work out, so I’m happy that Luton have called and I’m happy to be here.”

“That’s literally it, I had just finished training, and I was on my way home, went to get some petrol, got home, jumped in the shower, it was like phone’s ringing, 'can you get down to Luton, yes you can, fine no problem.'

"So I got down to do all the medical stuff, it wasn’t just done and dusted, but it’s been good, a hectic couple of hours, but I’m glad that everything’s been done and over the line.

"Today (Tuesday) was a very good day, I enjoyed training with the boys, met the lads and the gaffer and everyone’s been pretty welcoming, so it’s been good, a good day."

After reaching double figures for the Saddlers this season, including twice in the 3-1 win over Port Vale last time out, the former Fulham youngster had expected to be a target for clubs higher up the footballing echelon, but not necessarily during this window.

He said: "I didn’t think it would be now, I thought it might have been in the summer.

"It was flattering to get a few clubs interested now, but with everything that’s going on, with the pandemic and everything, I am very fortunate to have got my move now.

"But we continue, the hard work has just started again.

"I've got to push on and I'm ready to learn and soak up as much as I can in order to push myself to make myself a better player."

With Town paying an undisclosed fee for the attacker, Adebayo wasn't overly fussed about any pressures that came with the price tag, adding: "Not really, it is just a number at the end of the day.

"You just have to carry on, get on with your work and do your job.

"Everyone can have their opinion but at the end of the day, it just matters on what you are doing on and off the pitch, how you are expressing yourself on the training pitch, how you are trying to make yourself better at the end of the day.

"Give yourself the best chance to push on and show people that you are doing what you need to do, prove that you are working hard and that is all you can ask for."
