Benson happy to take a back seat at Exeter as long as Hatters triumph

Luton head to St James Park on the back of a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions, where they have conceded 13 goals.

When asked if Town needed to change their approach at Exeter, making themselves harder to beat, Benson said: “I don’t think 0-0 is a great result, but at the moment a clean sheet would be very good for us.

“Whether to achieve that we’ve got to maybe change formation and have one extra man in the middle of the park, be a bit tighter, a bit more difficult to play against, then yes, maybe that is a consideration for the manager to make.

“Whatever he goes with next week he’ll go with that because he thinks it’s the right way to go, and we’ll be happy to with that.

“If I’m the one to miss out because he goes for one up top then so be it – if the team wins I’ll be delighted for everyone.”

Benson is also well aware that Luton’s terrible defensive record this season is eroding the morale at Kenilworth Road.

He continued: “I’m not going to say confidence is shot to pieces, but I think it’s very low.

“You can just see that defensively, we just don’t look confident. When the ball comes into the box it looks a bit panicky, and that’s me from where I’m standing.

“So I think it’s going to take a couple of really dig-in performances, clean sheets; away to Exeter next week, dig in and just keep a clean sheet, that’s all we’ve got to think about it.

“If we come away 0-0, the worst game ever, obviously supporters who have travelled all the way there are going to be very upset because they’ve paid a lot of money, but we’ve got to find a way of keeping a clean sheet.”

Going forward there doesn’t appear to be too many problems for Luton as Benson made it four for the season with his brace against Northampton as Hatters have netted 35 goals in the league so far this term.

He added: “The forwards are doing all right, whoever’s playing upfront seems to be doing okay.

“We know we’ve got goals in this team, we’ve got Jack Marriott, Josh (McQuoid), so there are players who can score goals.

“If we can just grind out a clean sheet and then move on to the next week, keep another clean sheet and get back into the habit of keeping clean sheets.

“We work on it all the time in training, defending, but we’re not quite getting it right at the moment.”
