Benson wants to put a smile back on Luton faces

The 35-year-old made his return to the starting line-up on Tuesday night but despite an impressive display, couldn’t prevent Town from falling to a fifth successive defeat.

He said: “In the last eight games we’ll give it everything we’ve got. The fans deserve so much more for the season. They’ve been brilliant and they were again (against Wycombe).

“It’s just so disappointing that we’re not giving them anything back at the moment.

“We’ve got people in the dressing room who aren’t very happy but the only way they can change that is by putting a performance in on Saturday and come off the pitch winning.

“Those frowns will turn to smiles and we can start looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Benson was making this first first since November 29 after breaking his leg against Mansfield and was pleased to get through the 90 minutes.

He said: “As a 35-year-old, it’s good to back playing and enjoying my football and, hopefully, I’ll have a big part to play for the last eight games of the season.”

The striker also felt Hatters looked far better going forward than they have done at times this campaign, but knows winning games is all Town will be judged on.

He added: “It’s about getting that balance right, because there was a point in the season where we were so defensively solid but didn’t look like we could score a goal.

“I thought our attacking play was good [against Wycombe], it’s just sod’s law that it coincided with a poor defensive performance.

“Thank god I’m not a manager because the gaffer will have to sort it out and get us going for the last eight games of the season.

“We need to start winning games.”
