The 43-year-old was appointed on November 26 but could only lead the Robins to one win, with five draws, including a 1-1 with Hatters, but also seven defeats.

Speculation had been rejected by Cheltenham that Buckle was leaving after Tuesday’s 2-0 loss at Southend, but a statement on the club’s website this morning, said: “The Board of Cheltenham Town FC have reached an agreement with manager Paul Buckle for him to leave the club.

“Paul has departed from Cheltenham Town by mutual consent and with immediate effect.

“Neither party will be making any further statement on this issue.”

Buckle was in charge at Luton for 10 months during April 2012 and February 2013, before leaving on the eve of a Conference game at Macclesfield.
