Former Luton defender Chris Coyne labelled ex-Hatter Jean-Louis Valois as a 'freak' after the two were team-mates during Town's promotion-winning Division Three 2001-02 season.

The Frenchman, who had played for Saint-Priest, Lyon Duchère, Auxerre, Gueugnon and Lille, arrived at Kenilworth Road in the summer of 2001, signed by then boss Joe Kinnear.

He immediately announced himself to the Luton fans, scoring a wonder strike during the 5-1 win over Torquay United, which was only Coyne's second match himself, then netting in the following game, a 3-1 triumph at Leyton Orient.

Valois found the net once more in the 5-2 victory at Darlington, making it three in four appearances, while netted a further three times in the season to finish with six, plus countless assists, as Town ended as runners-up to Plymouth Argyle.

However, Valois was to leave in the summer, heading north of the border to sign for Hearts, also going on to play for Clyde, Burnley, UAE Second Division side Al-Khaleej and Al Nasr before his retirement a few years ago,

He made a huge impression on those at Kenilworth Road though, including Coyne, who said: "What a footballer that boy is.

"He was disgusting, disgusting, what a player.

"Some of the goals the guy scored, he made it look so easy.

"Right foot, left foot, four yards, 10 yards, the guy was a freak, but again, he just fitted in with the culture of the club.

"He was such a good guy, he was just a great bloke to be around.

"He had his moments, like all players do, but a real gentleman,a great player to be around and a great person.

"He just fitted into that culture that was at the club, so it was just a good place to be at."
